Info
The Is Zuddas Cave is part of a complex network of karst cavities located in Monte Meana, within the municipality of Santadi. The surrounding rocks date back approximately 530 million years. The initial section of the Is Zuddas Cave was accessed by unknown individuals in the early 1960s through a narrow natural tunnel about 20 meters deep. In 1968, quarry workers created an artificial entrance, providing an alternative to the more confined natural one. A few years later, in 1971, various speleological groups resumed explorations and managed to discover new tunnels, leading to a series of previously unknown chambers, totaling a length of about 1500 meters.
In 1985, after the installation of a tourist path, the cave was officially opened to the public. One of the main attractions of Is Zuddas is the remarkable variety of speleothems (or cave formations). In addition to the more common formations such as stalactites, stalagmites, and spectacular flowstones, the cave also features many unique types. Among them are the delicate tubular stalactites known as “straws,” the fragile aragonite needles that cover entire walls, and the aragonite eccentrics, which form intricate tangles of filaments that grow in defiance of gravity, creating stunning, disorderly white stone clusters.
