Year of foundation
Founded in 1994, the Italian Show Cave Association (AGTI) was established to meet the needs of industry operators to facilitate the exchange of their respective experiences in the managerial, technical, and promotional fields of Italy’s karst heritage.
AGTI also serves as a quality mark: not all caves can join the Association. To be admitted, they must meet specific requirements, such as the comfort and perfect accessibility of pathways, which should be traversable in complete safety without the need for flashlights or special clothing; the efficiency and reliability of the electrical lighting system; the accuracy of the information provided by guides; the necessary precautions for environmental preservation; and well-defined opening periods and hours that ensure visits can be conducted as scheduled. All of Italy’s most famous caves are part of AGTI.

History// AGTI
The Italian Show Cave Association (A.G.T.I.), founded in 1994, has undergone significant changes over time, influenced by global transformations, especially in the tourism sector. To keep pace with the times, A.G.T.I. has initiated a substantial renewal process, which began with a change in leadership: in 2009, the long-serving president Vittorio Verole Bozzello stepped down to facilitate this renewal, receiving the gratitude of the entire association for his 15 years of service. The original statute of A.G.T.I. has been revised and accompanied by new regulations to better address current needs. These regulatory instruments aim to channel resources toward a comprehensive project that promotes show caves while respecting the culture of eco-sustainable tourism.
A.G.T.I. is also a member of the International Show Caves Association (I.S.C.A.). In Italy, scientific and exploratory speleology is organized within the Italian Speleological Society (S.S.I.) or the Italian Alpine Club (C.A.I.), Speleological Commission, which particularly focuses on the School of Exploratory Techniques. Within the C.A.I., the National Alpine and Speleological Rescue Corps (C.N.S.A.S.) operates, providing rescue services for injured individuals both in the mountains and in caves. The International Union of Speleology (U.I.S.) is the international body that encompasses all speleological activities and includes a Commission dedicated to the protection of show caves.
