Info

A mere 10-minute drive from Varese, you can safely explore the heart of the Campo dei Fiori massif, descending to a depth of -48 meters along the illuminated tourist path of the Remeron Cave. The cave has been present on municipal maps since the first half of the 19th century, but it wasn’t until August 1900 that anyone decided to venture into the cavity for a proper exploration. The first explorers, Luigi Vittorio Bertarelli, Luigi Orrigoni, Don Giacomo Pensotti, and Don Luigi Tadini, reached the initial part of the Remeron, descending to -168 meters, where they discovered the first of the internal underground lakes, which was named Lake Bertarelli after its discoverer.

A series of explorations and the growing interest from local authorities led to the cave being opened for tourism in 1914, equipped with an acetylene lighting system and stone and cement steps. Tourist openings continued until the mid-1950s, accompanied by discoveries such as Lake Binda at -220 meters and the northern branches, which extend over 1.5 km of galleries leading to a second entrance.

However, the deterioration of the visitor facilities and the industrial boom that transformed Comerio and Varese during those years resulted in the abandonment of mountain activities, including the tourist operations of the Remeron. It wasn’t until 2004 that two initiatives from Regione Lombardia and Parco Campo dei Fiori facilitated the reconstruction of the walkways and the installation of a new lighting system, marking the beginning of a renewed tourist life for the Remeron.

Guided Tours

Guided tours of the Remeron Cave are available from April to October, while the cave remains closed for wildlife protection reasons during July and from November to March.

Visitors will be escorted from the former Marisa Rossi heliotherapeutic colony, which serves as the southern access point to the Campo dei Fiori Regional Park. The journey includes traversing the Park’s trails 10 and 12 before entering the Remeron through a sub-horizontal path leading to the First Hall, characterized by a natural rock bridge. After acclimatizing to the cave’s temperature of 8°C, visitors proceed to the Bottom Path, where the steep staircase reveals the true scale of the cave. This descent culminates at a depth of -48 meters, right before a series of wells marking the start of the speleological journey.

After ascending a few meters, visitors arrive at the Great Hall, where an annual Mass is celebrated in front of the Statue of the Madonna of the Depths.
