Info
The Cave of King Tiberius is placed in Riolo Terme within the Park of the Vena del Gesso Romagnola. It is renowned for its significant archaeological value, representing one of the most interesting vestiges of long-term human activity for both cult and burial purposes.
In the approximately 140 years since its discovery, numerous studies have highlighted the close interconnection between the cave’s environmental features and the interest from human groups, who utilized its chambers from the late Copper Age to the Roman Imperial Age for various purposes. These included religious practices, as well as settlement and burial uses.
Ancient legends surround the cave: some suggest, based on its name, that it was a refuge for Emperor Tiberius, where he may have met his death. Others speculate that it served as a hideout for criminals and coin counterfeiters. The cave is also noted in historical texts, specifically in a work by Pompeo Vizani (Bologna, 1596), which references events from the year 1200.
The structure of the Visitor Center, which hosts the Museum of Karst and Speleology, resulted from the renovation of the former Cantoniera (road house) along the provincial road connecting Borgo Rivola with Casola Valsenio, near the Cave of King Tiberius.
The Visitor Center serves as a thematic reference point for the area, accommodating educational activities for schools of all levels and for anyone interested in exploring the fascinating underground world of the Vena del Gesso.
