Info

The Onferno Nature Reserve is placed in the Province of Rimini, amidst the tranquil hills of the Valconca inland, near the borders of Montefeltro, offering views of the Adriatic coast and the Republic of San Marino. It is a Site of Community Importance (SIC) and is part of the Natura 2000 network, the European framework dedicated to the conservation of biodiversity within the territory of the European Union. Characterized by tranquility and complete immersion in nature, it provides serenity and well-being.

The karst complex of the Onferno Caves, known since the 19th century, is considered one of the most important in Italy among gypsum caves. It hosts the region’s largest colony of bats, with over 8,000 individuals belonging to eight different protected species. Formed by the waters of a river over millennia, the caves traverse a large and unique gypsum cliff, where the ancient “Castrum Inferni” once stood, now a small closed courtyard village that offers a wonderful view of San Marino set against the backdrop of the Valley of Conca and Sassofeltrio perched prominently in the foreground.

The territory of the reserve has distinctive characteristics due to the flora typical of higher altitudes, which thrives due to the influence of the caves, maintaining a constant temperature of around 12-13 degrees Celsius throughout the year. The reserve’s headquarters is located in the ancient Pieve di Santa Colomba, which has been restored and now serves as a Visitor Center and Natural History Museum, a true paradise for children.

Additionally, there is a Botanical Garden with pathways that explore native plants and ancient centuries-old oaks. Adjacent to the Visitor Center are two large areas: one designated for parking and the other equipped with tables and benches for picnics or moments of rest. Children and families find Onferno to be the ideal place for their leisure time: adventure, nature, and relaxation in a unique environment.
