Info

The Monte Cucco Cave is located within the mountain of the same name, in the Monte Cucco Park, a massif situated in the Umbrian-Marche Apennines.

This karst complex is one of the most extensive and studied in Italy, with a development of approximately 35 km and a vertical depth of about 920 m. It has four entrances and is entirely located on the property of the University of Original Men, situated in the municipality of Costacciaro.

Since 2009, part of the cave has been open to the public through a equipped tourist and hiking trail. The visit starts from Pian di Monte at an altitude of 1197 m above sea level. From here, a comfortable panoramic path of about 1.8 km leads uphill to the east entrance, located at an altitude of 1390 m. This entrance features a natural shaft of 27 m that can be descended using a steel ladder with resting platforms.

The tour continues along an internally illuminated path, which has been kept as natural as possible, with some crossings over steel stairs and walkways. The route extends for 800 meters in depth, winding through formations, large chambers, galleries, labyrinths, and tunnels.

Guided Tours

The Discovery Route is a 3-hour itinerary that includes the round-trip external journey and the internal visit to the cave. Visitors will successively explore the main chambers of the tourist branch: the Cathedral, the Margherita Hall, and the Becco Hall. The return is made along the same path as the outward journey. The total length of the excursion is approximately 4.5 km.

The Traverse Route is a 4-hour circular path that includes a complete visit to the cave and the external hike. This route adds the Secret Passage to the first itinerary before continuing to the north exit of the cave. The return takes place along a panoramic trail on the southwest slope of the mountain. The total length of this excursion is about 6 km. The minimum age for both routes is 8 years, and visits occur from April to December by reservation, subject to weather conditions since part of the route is outside.

The Adventure Route is a speleological itinerary suitable for beginners, which takes place outside the tourist route using caving techniques and equipment. It is conducted using only headlamps and allows visitors to explore parts of the cave that are not open to the public through an equipped path. The duration is approximately 4 hours, including the round trip to reach the cave. The minimum age is 10 years, and reservations are required for a minimum of 2 people.
