In the Grotta Gigante, open to the public since 1908 and located in the province of Trieste, you’ll discover an exciting reality where tourism, environment, and scientific research intertwine. Here, nature reveals itself in forms and colors of rare beauty, while science hides beneath the earth’s surface to better study our planet.
The cave is one of the most significant tourist sites in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region and the province of Trieste, a multicultural city due to its historical and geographical characteristics, attracting numerous tourists and scientists from all over the world every year. Each year, over 90,000 visitors enjoy a unique experience in our cave that creates unforgettable memories.
The Grotta Gigante gets its name from the impressive size of the cavern; it is, in fact, the tourist cave with the largest hall in the world. The great cavern, the main hall of the cave, has a volume of 365,000 cubic meters and measures 98.5 meters in maximum height, 167.60 meters in length, and 76.30 meters in width.
Guided Tours
A visit to the Grotta Gigante lasts 1 hour and is conducted by specialized guides who accompany visitors along a route of 850 meters, descending 100 meters below the earth’s surface. The temperature remains a constant 11°C. The cave is open year-round, and within the visitor center, guests can freely explore the Scientific Speleological Museum, which also features a station for a virtual tour of the cave, accessible to both disabled individuals and those with mobility difficulties.
The visit experiences have also been enhanced with underground aperitifs, where visitors can taste the typical wines of the Carso region in a truly unique setting, as well as an 8-meter high tower where they can try their hand at basic sport climbing techniques.
