Known to fishermen navigating along the coast since the early 20th century, the Grotta del Fico was officially explored only in the early 1960s by the Pio XI Speleological Group in collaboration with the Bologna Speleological Union. During these initial explorations, a remarkable discovery was made: some of the last remaining Mediterranean monk seals along the coast had taken refuge in one of the cave’s submerged siphons. The scientific studies that followed were of great importance, providing new insights into the life and habits of this mysterious animal, which has since disappeared from Sardinia.
The Grotta del Fico spans multiple levels, starting 15 meters below sea level and reaching up to 70 meters in height, with a total explored length of around 4 kilometers. Recent studies have proposed new theories about the cave’s formation, suggesting it resulted from the mixing of seawater and freshwater, which triggered the karstic erosion process.
Guided Tours
The Grotta del Fico was opened to the public in August 2003 by the Baunese Speleological Society, which continues to manage it. Currently, about 800 meters of the cave are accessible, equipped with lighting and walkways that allow visitors to safely explore the ancient fossil riverbed and admire the captivating siphon where, up until the 1970s, Mediterranean monk seals would give birth to their pups. Throughout the visit, knowledgeable guides share the cave’s history and secrets, with tours available in English or with the help of audioguides for international visitors.
The entrance to the cave is perched about 15 meters above sea level, nestled in the limestone cliffs of Baunei’s coastline, not far from the stunning beaches of Cala Mariolu and Cala Biriala. Due to its location, the cave is only open during the summer season and can be reached exclusively by sea, either via private boats or through shuttle and rental services from the main ports of Santa Maria Navarrese, Arbatax, and Orosei.
